Two Minds

The most notable ongoing fallacy related to mental illness suggests ‘two minds’ is synonymous with schizophrenia. In a voice loud and with clarity I re-enforce that schizophrenia is a chronic brain disorder characterized by psychosis - loss of touch with reality, delusions disorganized thinking, perceptual disturbances (hallucinations). The misunderstanding has arisen because of the Greek roots of the word, ‘schizo’ meaning split and ‘phren’ meaning mind. The brain condition does not involve separate distinct personalities.

The term two minds or split personality closely aligns with a condition whereby a person experiences distinct alternate identities known as Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID). This latter condition previously referred to as ‘Multiple Personality Disorder’ is entirely different to the spectrum of psychotic disorders! This picture ventures to highlight the complexities of Dissociative Identity Disorder perhaps in part characterizing the severe disruption of the unified sense of self!
